The main hatch cover on top of the cabin
was built in the same fashion as the fore hatch. I used 4/4 mahogany
for the frame with a 3/8" plywood top rabbeted into it. I used miter
joints for the corners. They normally are a week joint, but I have
screwed them together and with the top rabbeted into them the joint is
quite sturdy. In fact the hatch cover is way over build. It
is fairly heavy and very substantial. |

I wanted my grab rails on the top of the
cabin to stand alone and not double as hatch rails, so I made separate
hatch rails. A sketch
shows how they fit. |

The hatch simply slides along the top
of the cabin under the rails. It is difficult to see in the picture but
there are small scuppers on the rails to allow water to evacuate. |
