I obtained a 10"
wide piece of 4/4 mahogany. I wanted grate slats 3/4" wide and thought
a dado blade on a radial arm saw would be the easiest way to cut these
dados. Not having any stationary tools, I usually try to find a friend
who has what I need. Unfortunately, no one I know does any dadoing. I devised
a way to use my router to make these cuts. By using a gig that fits in
one groove, I could cut a successive dado using only my router. |

I was able to find a friend who allowed
me to use his table saw to cut the piece into 11 3/4" slats. Here
I am gluing 4 slats perpendicular to the others. These will hold everything
in place with the correct spacing. I cut a number of 3/4" x 1/2" slats
to be glued into the empty dados. |

After cutting the grate to shape, I rabbeted
the edges. I built a frame to go around the grate and rabbeted the inside
edge to fit the grate. Half lap joints were used on the frame. |
