02 / 17 / 01 I made my own cleats from scrap mahogany. I cut the profile of the horn shape with a jig saw and rough shaped the cleat using a belt sander. The fine shaping was done with a drum sander on a drill press.
02 / 17 / 01 This jam cleat was made with the same technique.
08 / 18 / 01 I decided that while singlehanding it becomes becomes a bit too much of a hands-on operation, with the wheel and mainsheet always in a hand. The wheel clutch allows for some relief and sitting or standing on the mainsheet works for a while but a better arrangement to cleat off the main was desired.

I wanted something that worked like a cam cleat that would release with a bit of back pressure on the sheet. This jam cleat works pretty well for that. A slight tug on the sheet and the line is free. This is the rig for a starboard tack. It should be reversed for a port tack. It won't get set without full intent, since under some wind conditions/settings it requires 2 hands (one on the boom.) to set.
