That's Phil Gowans.
I live in Salt Lake City, Utah where I'm a computer professional. I'm 59,
married with 5 children and 10 grandchildren. I was a Naval Flight Officer
in the Navy.
I have always been fascinated by wind and wind powered vehicles. I still like to play with kites. As a teenager I took sailing classes in the San Francisco Bay area, and later in the Navy. I have loved sailing since my youth but never had a boat. Recently I have taken up hang-gliding and wind-surfing, but at my age I needed something that isn't quite so physical. Since I love water sports and building things, the idea of building my own boat has always appealed to me. I got a part time job and said I was earning to build my own boat. The money always got used on "necessary things". Building a boat only seemed to be a dream. This went on so long no one believed I would ever do it. I've not done much large scale woodworking (only models) and didn't have many tools. After most of my kids left home I started collecting tools and looking seriously at plans. I've been talking about a boat so long that everybody was surprised when I actually brought home a load of wood. While building my boat I set a goal to sail it on all lakes in Utah with a boat ramp. When I found there are about 55, I wondered if that goal was possible. Who knows, but I'll have fun trying a lot of them. |
